PERSONALITY.

Yondu is the type of man that upon meeting him puts many people immediately on edge. His face is fixed in an almost permanent frown and he wears clothing that's generally imposing. He's relatively average (by American standards) in height, but the way that he carries himself compensates for it; with an intimidating air of authority and unsubtle aggression. When he does smile, he reveals a mouth of jagged teeth, half of them gold. This isn't exactly a comforting gesture, and often a smile comes with Yondu gaining an advantage over someone with pride in Peter Quill, his adopted son, being a rare exception. Yondu is also casually confident in his appearance, not appearing the least bit modest when hiring prostitutes, he's not ashamed of his scars and wear and aware enough that most of his comments about his remarkable looks are just jokes.

His dialog tends towards the threatening, the ridiculing, the commanding, and very occasionally the exhausted. He expresses remorse for a life of ill acts and bad choices, constantly weighed down by the consequences of them. Direct apologies have often been rejected, and he's been left alone. If other people want to be good and kind, let them, but he's seen the worst of how people take advantage of each other. In his opinion, anyone that would try to be kind to him for any amount of time would eventually reject him or cause him problems. Nothing in his life contradicted this, having been rejected by his parents, by his Ravager captain squad, and by Peter Quill (though this changed in their final minutes together).

Yondu cares a lot about his crew (which about a third of them are able to recognize the fact that he does, as evidenced by GOTG2) and he cares most about Peter even if he never really gave him a reason to see it. Even among the crew that mutinied, he could recall Vorkor's sleeping habits. He also did his best to make no one feel more important than the other and was able to maintain the act for a couple of decades.

In order to keep Peter as part of the crew, he had to stick to a narrative that he had kept him rather than taking him to Ego because he'd be useful for theft. He went out of his way to be agitating and threatening, and even if it was meant in good humor in some cases he's never made a point of clarifying that it was a joke to Peter and knowingly let him think the worst. For all that he comes off as an uncaring rogue, he's surprisingly responsible and does his best to look at the big picture. He's a team player more than a lone wolf when facing a problem. Sometimes he'll bypass good scores for a kinder resolution. He's even pretended to threaten people he likes with death because he needs to maintain a show of power with his crew, but patiently waited to be presented with excuses to spare them. But he can also be ruthless, and if opposed he's not afraid to use lethal force to get rid of whoever is in his way. In fact, he favors it.

He's never committed to a romance and it's not a high priority for him. If he had loving relationships in the past, he's not seen fit to mention them in front of anyone nor did anyone notice. His best friend appears to be Kraglin Obfonteri, his first mate, and Kraglin inadvertently betrayed him when he got frustrated with the fact he wouldn't turn on his adopted son in favor of his crew (he was unaware of the depth of Yondu's attachment because he'd hidden it so well). He and Peter seem to be the two most important people in his life, and even Peter he would threaten with death (even if he stalled to find any excuse to not go through with it). Rocket was probably the first person he connected with on a deeper level in years, breaking down and angrily yelling about how he understood him and why he tried to push people away.

While Yondu dislikes people that threaten or abuse him otherwise he doesn't have strong feelings. His bitterness at being a Battle Slave doesn't lean towards his slave-masters, the Kree, but towards his parents who sold him knowing what might happen to him. This is probably part of why, when he discovered that Ego was killing his own children, he hid the last one from him. Once he knew what might happen to him he withdrew from the contract no matter how much money he earned. There's the implication that he went to the other Ravager captains to help him, and upon learning what he'd done rather than lend a hand they exiled him to deal with his own actions.

Some people he can find annoying, especially people he sees as being full of themselves (something he's passed on to Peter) but for the most part he has a neutral "they're there" opinion about most people. He can get drunk and get along with like-minded individuals, and if you save him from a rough spot you'll have his respect. Even people he's friends with he's abrasive towards eventually, using that as a barrier to protect himself emotionally.

He'll be friendlyish with children, often treating them either as little adults or teaching them to protect themselves even at a young age. While he'd make intimidating jokes that might not be funny, he did do things like train Peter to fight and fly a fighter ship as a preteen. Thanks to Yondu's efforts Peter was a competent thief by the time he was twelve. Being that he was sold as a slave at a very young age, he could also have a skewed perspective of what's expected of children.

Yondu's number one focus has been money and maintaining his crew. As far as he's concerned, he's in it for himself. He wants to survive and he wants to enjoy his Ravager life. He mostly sticks to the Ravager code even after having been exiled. He'd love to have relationships like that again, he sees how exceptionally rare they are and often finds the effort not worth it.

ABILITIES.

▶Yaka Arrow

As listed in inventory, it's his primary weapon. An arrow made out of Yaka metal (also called Trillium, Trillite, and the 'living metal'), an alloy exclusive to the Centauri homeworld and responds to his fin's psionic control and whistle commands. Yaka metal is highly sensitive to sound and almost as strong as vibranium, capable of withstanding intense explosions and able to pierce the hulls of armored ships.

The fin he's using is the second one in Guardians of the Galaxy. The way it works is it constantly lays out a map of the area around him. He doesn't always have to look at the arrow to guide it, but direct it towards shapes that he detects through the fin's sensors. Visual reference helps for accuracy since a shape doesn't betray many details.

His fin is so integrally connected to his brain and its commands are so unique and exclusive that no one else can use the arrow without extensive training. Arrow demonstrations here.

▶Combat

Yondu is a former battle slave and decent at hand-to-hand combat, even without his arrow. He's not at ninja levels but he could still put a military-style beatdown on someone. He has the usual mortal impairments and limitations, but if provoked into a fistfight with another soldier he could hold his own.

He's excellent with combat vehicles, especially as a pilot in a fighter ship. He can also improvise things like mining ships into actual combat ships.

▶Engineering

Yondu can rewire electronics on the fly, using whatever resources are available to him. He can work under intense fire and high pressure.

▶Leadership

He's a good tactical strategist and given enough information and manpower can plan incredibly effective organized attacks. Up until the end he was an effective captain that maintained command of his crew and led them on many successful missions and heists. Peter Quill was responsible for the failure of a few missions and caused the primary discord among Yondu's crew.

He allowed marginalized parties (he did have gay officers) and disabled individuals (men with damaged eyes and so on) on as crew, though he had a preference for males as crew. I suspect that he didn't particularly like being aggressive towards women if he could help it. He was even able to organize an attack that severely damaged one of Thanos's ships.

▶Plant Manipulation (CRAU from VoidTreckers)

Acquired the ability to grow and change plants. While growing is taking a while to work on and he has to focus more time on it, changing is easier. This ranges from changing the colors of flowers to convincing a plant to grow thorns or cactus spines or mutating combinations of fruit.

This faintly connects to his Centaurian connections to nature that he never developed, and has to emulate a plant that he's actually encountered at some point in his life (this includes some of Groot's traits, like glowing pollen). He can't make up things on the fly. However he's well-traveled and has a lot of options to choose from.

▶Slavery

Yondu was sold as a slave to the Kree as an infant by his parents¹. He was originally a battlefield messenger and that's why he learned to read and write in Kree, but he never learned to write in Centaurian⁴. Especially in his youth he encountered Skrull slaves, but as the Kree commenced ethnic cleansing he encountered fewer and fewer³, but he still has no ill will towards them and actually enjoys running into Skrulls⁴ (though in the univers where T'Challa was Starlord and the ethnic cleansing didn't happen, the relationship is more adversarial¹). The only way he kept track of his native language was through contact with other Centaurian slaves⁴ and his natural fin was removed as soon as he stopped growing³. He was placed in a Kree inhibitor after his training to use the arrow began³, and during this time he received many punishment scars across his face to reinforce obedient behavior for a high-value war slave/test subject¹. When Stakar rescued him, he cut loose on his owners and the unit that had been using him, giving Xandarian forces an advantage in battle and enough cover for Yondu and the other Ravagers to make an escape⁴. That Yondu was a slave isn't a secret because of the punishment scars or that his criminal record is known¹.

▶Centaurians

Centaurians aren't an especially common race in the cosmos³ because they don't have their own system of interstellar travel². Yaka metal is a metal exclusive to that world, almost strong as vibranium¹. Centaurians are hunters primarily (omnivorous technically but preferring meat), and most still use bows with arrows tipped with yaka, and they have enhanced senses like smell and sight as well as an affinity towards nature². Yaka is an exceptionally expensive metal to find off the Centauri homeworld⁴. Both males and females born with fins meant to attract mates² that they find soothing to be touched³. Females have a pouch in which they carry their young (1 | 2 | 3)². Their language is mostly clicks and whistles and grunts and it's exhausting for their throats² (which is why Yondu's throat is constantly scratchy³). Between not being able to write in Centaurian, feeling insufficient in the language, and not having a natural fin, Yondu can't feel like a full Centaurian again so he identifies with being a Ravager more closely⁴.

▶Ravager Exile

Yondu was the archer type in their Captain group¹. He did make an attempt to specifically target Kree outposts in his early career as an act of dominance, leading to his first bounties³. As his reputation spread, his backstory caught Ego's attention¹. He talked Yondu into believing that acting as a delivery system for him was no worse than taxi transport and he wouldn't get in trouble, despite it being against the code. He could also generate ridiculous amounts of wealth right in front of his eyes³. Because Yondu had been without anything for so long he made a stupid, greedy decision and agreed to Ego's terms¹. At first, he was detached enough to see the deliveries as simple transports, but he starting getting attached to the kids as time went on⁴. He picked up Peter and after contacting Ego to work out some details, determined the other children had died. He approached the Ravager captains to ask them for help, knowing that the full fleet of the Ravagers could destroy Ego. Stakar was so outraged, though, that he exiled him without hearing him out fully and Yondu was too proud to stick around and be contrite. He spent the rest of his days trying to keep his own crew loyal so they wouldn't take Peter to Ego, and so that Yondu could rally them against Ego if he came back³. Not many people knew why Yondu Udonta was exiled or that he even was exiled, and he frequently did business in regular Ravager establishments even after his banishment¹.

▶Raising Peter

Yondu wasn't exactly a doting father. He focused on pushing Peter through training so that he could defend himself (mostly against his own crew, but he never said that). He gave him a ship to fly when he was ten¹ and started training him to use weapons at around the same age. However, if someone threatened Peter he was quick to step in, even if he yelled at Peter after for provoking it, or if Peter was sick he'd dedicate a lot of effort into nursing him back to health⁴. He would sometimes pick him up gifts from vendors¹ and unknowingly taught him how to pick up women³. He never did anything like try to force Peter to love him and always figured Peter didn't actually care much for him, but he did secretly love Peter a lot and tried to applaud him every time he did something well¹.

▶MCU Events

•Yondu knows about experiments on a number of Kree planets, but not specifically ones on Earth. He knows Earth as "Terra" and knows the Kree designation for it is C-53.³
•During his early days as a captain the Ravagers provided some sanctuary during the Skrull ethnic cleansing committed by the Kree. Some still exist as a part of Ravager crews. None remained a part of his crew after his exile.⁴
•He heard about Ronan the Accuser being humiliated by some mysterious Terran woman. It's a 'through the grapevine' account and he had a good laugh about it.³

CONTENT WARNINGS.
Yondu was a slave, and while it's sci-fi space slavery it's a sensitive topic to address. While I don't treat Yondu as ever having experienced sexual assault, I do say he knows slaves that did.

He committed verbal and physical abuse towards his adopted son to 'toughen him up', because he suspected his crew might try to force him to go to Ego. Yondu admitted his faults at the end and never went out of his way to actually declare that he felt that Peter was his son so there was less of a burden of obligation on Peter's behalf. That said, he did still pushed him around and threatened him for misbehavior to make him look like an average crewman. People can opt-out of the discussion of it and he likely won't bring it up outside of saying that he wasn't a very good father-figure.

THREADING.
I'll probably not tag threads back if they're over a week and a half old, sorry. If I've lost the steam for a thread, I won't care to finish it. If the tag is still substantial I may keep going, but for a one or two liner I'll drop the thread. I'm fine with thread-hopping on my posts. I want characters to use any dialog to their benefit.

RELATIONSHIPS.
Yondu sleeps with an android so it's obvious that he's still capable of having sex and his behavior towards Stakar is suggestive that he once had some sort of romantic feelings for him (maybe not at all reciprocated). I don't think anyone will want to go sleeping with Yondu but I'm open to it if they are. Hugs are welcome, IC reactions dependent. Kisses are also welcome, IC reactions also situational.

I do play out smut often. I don't have to, but I do at least like to discuss what would happen if it's their first time.

FIN.
No controlling Yondu's fin or arrow. The last time I messed with that I put the character in a bad place and made him unplayable, so I'm not repeating that mistake.
